Smart Port Challenge (SPC) is an annual innovation program by PIER71 that invites startups to tackle key challenges in the maritime industry with technology-driven solutions.

  1. Managing Cybersecurity Risks and Incidences
  2. Derisking Onboard Inspections
  3. Recycling Ship Waste
  4. Cargo Hold Cleaning or Discharge
  5. Enabling Connectivity for Maritime Vessels
  6. Digital Tools to Enhance Energy Efficiency
  7. Crew Training Programmes to Adopt Energy-Efficient Practices
  8. Safer Pilot/Crew Transfer Solution
  9. Situational Awareness On and Around Ships
  10. Reducing Human Error at Sea

Eligibility criteria

  • Solutions must be applicable to the maritime industry and address challenges faced by ports

Additional Criteria for Scale-ups:

  • More than 20 full-time employees
  • Annual revenue exceeding USD 500,000 (as of 2024)
  • Over 5 years in operations
  • Series A stage or beyond

Prizes

  1. Funding opportunities:
    • Grants up to USD 77,443 for proof-of-concept or pilot projects
    • Grants up to USD 193,608 for new product development
    • Cash prizes for the best startups
  2. Access to maritime corporates, VCs, domain experts, PIER71 partners, and alumni network
  3. Chance to secure a pilot project with at least one maritime corporate, funded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)
